Transfers

Former ‘protected’ members of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme who joined the Career Average scheme from 1 April 2022 had the opportunity to transfer-in service from other registered pension schemes between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023.

Former ‘unprotected’ and ‘tapered’ members can transfer into the Teachers’ Pension Scheme between 1 October 2023 and 30 September 2024. The pensionable service they built up in the career average scheme during the remedy period was ‘rolled back' to the final salary scheme on 1 October 2023.

Club transfers are those where an arrangement is in place to move employees and their pensions from one employer to another. These are mainly within the public sector, such as Teachers’ Pensions, Civil Service, NHS or Firefighters.

Non-club transfers are done on a cash equivalent transfer value (CETV) basis to those who are not relevant club members. This is typically for members who transfer in from a private sector pension.

Further information can be found on our dedicated transfer page.

The Transitional Protection changes that have been introduced have meant there are choices to make for:

  • Former protected members who joined the career average scheme from 1 April 2022
  • Former unprotected and tapered members who had service rolled back into the final salary scheme from 1 October 2023
  • All members who have transferred service in or out of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme for the remedy period (1 April 2015 – 31 March 2022)
  • Members who choose to transfer in or out in the future.

To understand in more detail how the changes affect members in relation to transfers then please read our factsheet (PDF, 143 KB) (This link opens in a new window).
