Changes for teachers with additional contracts to their full-time employment

Changes have been introduced for members in the career average arrangement who have additional contracts to their full-time employment.

Before 1 April 2015, a full-time teacher with an additional part-time teaching contract could not join the Teachers’ Pension Scheme with their part-time contract. If you as their employer also participated in the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), they would have been eligible to join the LGPS for the part-time teaching contract.

Whilst this will continue to be the case for a member who has remained in the final salary arrangement, this has changed for members who move into the career average arrangement.

From April 2015, the additional part-time teaching contract became eligible in the Teachers’ Pension Scheme for members in the career average arrangement only and consequently is no longer eligible in the LGPS. As and when the member transitions into the Teachers’ Pension Scheme career average arrangement, you must cease their contributions to the LGPS for their part-time teaching contract and make their contributions to the Teachers’ Pension Scheme instead.

A member must be enrolled into the Teachers’ Pension Scheme for their part-time service from the date they move into the career average arrangement and they must opt-out in the usual way via our website if they don’t wish for their part-time service to be pensionable in the Teachers’ Pension Scheme. If you don’t enrol your member into the Teachers’ Pension Scheme it could lead to an arrears of contributions to the Scheme and the member may miss the opportunity to opt-out from the point of entry to the career average arrangement for the part-time contract.

To check if a member has two contracts with one employer it will be useful to use our calculator to check concurrent service.
